# Free Tier

> Start on the Free tier with public hubs, one connection, one memory item, 100 intents a day, and clear limits before upgrading.

The Free tier is the simplest way to learn Thalovant without creating your own hub.

Use it to browse public hubs, connect one device, let the assistant remember one thing about you, and learn what Billing unlocks when you need more.

## What the Free Plan Allows

| | Free plan |
| --- | --- |
| Connections | **1** |
| Active API tokens | **1**, with `hubs:read`, `clients:read`, `clients:write`, `memory:read`, and `memory:write` |
| Intents per day | **100** |
| Personal memory | **1** durable memory item |
| Token rate | 60 calls a minute, 10,000 a day, 200,000 a month |
| Public hubs | Browse and connect to any of them, with the browser preview as a sandbox |
| Your own hubs | Not on this plan |
| Hub address | None |

One connection means one device at a time. Pairing a second phone needs a paid
plan, or you can move the connection you already have onto the new device —
the app offers that directly, and it doesn't change the count.

When you meet a limit, the refusal says which allowance is full and what
the number is, rather than only that something failed.

Free accounts are for adults, like every Thalovant account. See [Kids and Families](/start/kids-and-families/) for how children use Thalovant.

A Home Assistant link sits outside both allowances. Link it to a public hub
such as Daily Desk and your one connection stays free for your phone or
speaker; [Link Home Assistant](/manage/home-assistant/) has the steps.

## What You Can Do Today

The best first move on the free plan is Public hubs: pick one and try it. You can create one Thalovant Voice connection to a public hub, and the assistant can remember one thing about you. The pages you'll use are Dashboard, Public hubs, Connections, Memory, Billing, Profile, and Help. Owned hubs, private skills, access rules, SDK origins, runtime operations, extra connections, analytics, and the advanced live views stay locked, and a locked button leads to Billing, which says whether the plan is the reason.

## The Free Path

1. **Open Public hubs.** Pick a listed hub with clear starter prompts.
2. **Try the browser preview when available.** Use one starter prompt before creating anything. Preview sessions keep no memory and no transcript.
3. **Create one voice connection.** Let the setup link pair Thalovant Voice to the public hub.
4. **Keep access rules narrow.** Use the recommended question-style access first.
5. **Ask it to remember one thing.** Free keeps one personal memory item, such as your city or your name.
6. **Check Dashboard.** Confirm the connection appears and nothing unexpected needs attention.
7. **Open Billing when something is locked.** Billing tells you whether the action needs a different plan.

This path teaches the same loop you'll use later: hub, connection, access rules, health check.

## One Memory Item

Free keeps exactly one active personal memory item. It survives between sessions, so the assistant can remember one useful thing about you.

The second time you ask it to remember something new is the upgrade moment: the save is refused, and the upgrade path points to the Home plan. Nothing already saved is lost. To keep a different item instead, delete the current one on the Memory page, then save the new one.

Developers see the same limit as HTTP 409 with the code `memory_limit`, the limit `1`, and `upgrade_plan` set to `HOME`.

## What Free Is Good For

    Learn hubs, connections, access rules, Dashboard, and Help without designing a private setup.

    Use shared hub listings and starter prompts before deciding what you want to build.

    Pair one Thalovant Voice client to understand setup, access rules, and health checks.

    Let Billing explain when your own hub, more memory, or more devices become useful.

## What Usually Needs a Paid Plan

| Need | Plan that adds it |
| --- | --- |
| Remember more than one thing | Home and above. Memory is unlimited on paid plans. |
| Create your own hub | Home (1 hub), Family (2 hubs), or a Work plan. |
| Add more devices | Home (5), Family (12), or a Work plan. |
| Use private skill sets | Any plan with an owned hub and a runtime group. |
| Create API tokens that write hubs | Home and above. Free tokens can't carry `hubs:write`. |
| Use a hub address | Home and Family get a managed address; Work plans add custom addresses. |
| Approve SDK origins | Work plans. |
| List a hub in the public catalogue | Work plans with listing room, after a Thalovant review. |

See [Billing and Plans](/workspace/billing-and-plans/) for prices and the full comparison.

## If a Button Is Locked

Don't treat a locked button as a setup failure.

1. **Read the message beside the button.** It usually says what is missing.
2. **Open Billing.** Check the current plan, limits, and support path.
3. **Return to the same page.** Continue only if the plan includes the action.

  The Free tier is best when the first setup stays small: one public hub, one connection, one access-rule set, one memory item, one health check.

## Free Tier Looks Right When

The Free tier path is working when:

- you can explain which public hub you chose;
- one connection is paired to that hub;
- access rules are narrow and easy to read;
- the assistant recalls your one memory item;
- Dashboard shows the expected connection;
- Billing explains any locked action before you change setup.

## Next Step

Start with Public hubs if you're exploring. Open Billing when the thing you want is locked.
