# AI Disclosure

> Every Thalovant client must tell people they are talking to an AI at first contact. Get the ai_disclosure text from the API and show or speak it.

{/* Last Edit: Claude Opus 5.5 - 2026-09-29 - Motive: The ai_disclosure text now names financial decisions, as the Terms of Service do. */}

Every client that talks to a Thalovant hub must tell the person that they are talking to an AI assistant. Show or speak the disclosure at first contact, before or with the first answer.

Thalovant supplies the exact text as the `ai_disclosure` field, in English and French, so every app, device, and agent says the same thing. The rule covers any app, device, kiosk, or web client you build for a Thalovant hub, and any hub you publish for other people to talk to.

## The Text

| Language | `ai_disclosure` |
| --- | --- |
| English (`en`) | You are talking to an AI assistant. Answers can be wrong; don't rely on them for medical, legal, financial or emergency decisions. |
| French (`fr`) | Vous parlez à un assistant d'IA. Les réponses peuvent être erronées; ne vous y fiez pas pour des décisions médicales, juridiques, financières ou relatives à une urgence. |

English is the default. Use the French text when your client runs in French.

Read the text from the API rather than copying it into your code. If Thalovant changes the wording, your client picks it up without a release.

## Where to Get It

| Source | What it returns | When to use it |
| --- | --- | --- |
| `GET /v1/legal/versions` | `ai_disclosure` with both `en` and `fr`, plus the current terms and privacy versions and the legal page links. Public, no sign-in. | Any client, and any client that needs French. |
| Client configuration and identity payloads | `ai_disclosure` with the English text. | A client that already reads its configuration or [identity](/developers/identity-files/) from Thalovant. |

```bash
curl -s https://api.thalovant.com/v1/legal/versions
```

```json
{
  "terms_version": "2026-10-01",
  "privacy_version": "2026-10-01",
  "business_terms_version": "2026-10-01",
  "urls": {
    "terms": "https://thalovant.com/terms/",
    "ai_safety": "https://thalovant.com/ai-safety/"
  },
  "ai_disclosure": {
    "en": "You are talking to an AI assistant. Answers can be wrong; don't rely on them for medical, legal, financial or emergency decisions.",
    "fr": "Vous parlez à un assistant d'IA. Les réponses peuvent être erronées; ne vous y fiez pas pour des décisions médicales, juridiques, financières ou relatives à une urgence."
  }
}
```

The example shortens `urls`. The real response lists every legal page, as shown on [Legal Documents](/legal/).

## Show It at First Contact

1. **Fetch the text.** Read `ai_disclosure` when the client starts or when it loads its configuration. Cache it for the session.
2. **Pick the language.** Use `fr` for a French client and `en` for everything else.
3. **Show it before the first answer.** A screen client shows the text next to the conversation. A voice-only client speaks it once, before or with its first reply.
4. **Keep it the same.** Do not shorten, reword, or hide the text.
5. **Show it again for a new person.** A shared device, kiosk, or public web page shows it at the start of each new session.

  The disclosure does not replace crisis help. If a person talks about harming themselves or others, or describes an emergency, follow the [AI safety and crisis protocol](https://thalovant.com/ai-safety/) and point them to local emergency services.

## What a Reviewer Looks For

Your client meets the requirement when:

- the disclosure appears or is spoken at first contact, before or with the first answer;
- the text comes from `ai_disclosure`, not from a hardcoded copy;
- a French client shows the French text;
- a shared device repeats it for each new session.

## When the Disclosure Is Missing or Repeats

| Symptom | First check |
| --- | --- |
| The configuration has no `ai_disclosure` field | Your client reads an older payload. Call `GET /v1/legal/versions` instead. |
| The voice client speaks the disclosure on every reply | Speak it once per session, at first contact. |
| A reviewer cannot find the disclosure | Show it where the conversation starts, not in a settings page or a footer. |
